PROFILE:
SUSAN BRANCH
A
self-taught artist and author of fourteen hand-written, watercolor
illustrated books published by Little Brown and Company/Time Warner since
1986, Susan Branch is a household name and an “authority on matters of the
home. She inspires millions of women who appreciate creative homemaking and
a simplified lifestyle. Her artwork adds charm, color, humor and inspiration
to busy, multi-faceted lives. Susan’s work represents a return to family,
home and friendship, bearing a message of sensibility, self-confidence and
self-expression. She is an accomplished designer, author and watercolor
artist; a renowned cook; a seamstress, crafter, and an exemplary homemaker.
She promotes healthy, happy, comfortable, family life with her own charming
and witty style. Her appeal spans generations.
As a
child, she loved homemaking, sewing, cooking and decorating. Surprisingly,
Susan was thirty years old before she began painting and drawing
professionally. In spite of having never taken an art lesson, Susan began
painting the things around her that she loved the most. Her
theme-illustrations depict “the simple things in life” like quilts, herb and
vegetable gardens, birds and pets, summertime fun, and classic “girl stuff.”
Susan has
a special relationship with her mostly female fans, who range in age from 7
to 90 years old. Her fans are gardeners, cooks, quilters, artists,
scrapbookers, business women and executives, students, home-makers, moms,
grandmas and single women who are well-connected to their families and
friends. They are gift-givers, live in all parts of the country and abroad,
at all financial levels.
Many of
them have strong interest in the environment and are animal lovers (she gets
many adorable pet photos!) They like to entertain and enjoy life’s
celebrations.
Susan has
a mailing list of some 50,000 collector’s of her books and gift products.
All of her “Heart of the Home” books are still in print in hard cover.
Combined, these books have sold more than 3.5 million copies and are the
cornerstone and foundation of her brand.
For those
die-hard collectors who take the time to write a personal letter, Susan
sends her annual newsletter, called “Willard,” full of news on her life:
news about new licensees and where to find her new products; personal
recipes and homemaking ideas and even a few samples for fun. This on-going
relationship with collectors is an important aspect of Susan Branch Studios
and is seen as invaluable to the continual re-energizing of her brand.
